Restriction of Hazardous Substances Directive or RoHS Testing

Restriction of Hazardous Substances Directive or RoHS bans the use of certain hazardous substances in electrical and electronic equipment. The six hazardous materials that are banned under RoHS include Lead, Cadmium, Mercury, Hexavalent Chromium, Polybrominated Biphenyl(PBB)and Polybrominated Diphenyl Ether (PBDE).

However, there are
surface mount components which contain RoHS restricted substances, such as paints and pigments, PVC (vinyl) cables as a stabilizer (e.g. power cords, USB cables), cable harness assembly, solders or RoHS soldering, printed circuit board finishes, leads, internal and external interconnects, glass in television and photographic products (e.g. CRT television screens and camera lenses), metal parts, lamps, and bulbs.

RoHS Testing is done to check the level RoHS restricted substances used in manufacturing of electronic equipment. The RoHS Testing is done by experts using advanced laboratory instrumentation like hand-held XRF screening, ICP-MS, ICP-OES, GC-MS, GC-ECD, FTIR, UV-vis and other RoHS compatible test methods. There are various RoHS Testing programs devised to make the rigorous RoHS restrictions clear. All the electronic components need to be tested for the RoHS compliance before they are made available in the market for sale.

All the electronic products and accessories need to undergo a
RoHS Testing to comply with RoHS and WEEE standards. The methods used for testing include both the Non Destructive Screening Method using X-Ray Fluorescence Spectroscopy (XRF) as well as the Verification Method using Inductively Coupled Plasma (ICP) Spectrometer. The RoHS Testing ensure that the restricted substances are used in limitation without affecting the functionality and performance of the equipment in any way.
